Community Confidence Rises Across Philippi East

A new PEDI survey shows residents feel safer today than they did ten months ago — in every place we measured.


Between August 2025 and May 2026, PEDI’s Presidential Employment Programme (PEP) survey team spoke to 4,760 residents about how safe they feel in their own street, and along four of Philippi’s busiest roads: New Eisleben Road, Govan Mbeki Road, Stock Road and Sheffield Road.


To see what really changed, we compared the first three months of the survey with the last three months. This is a reliable way to tell a real trend apart from normal ups and downs from one month to the next.


The result: safety perceptions rose everywhere.

  • Your street: up 21 points, from 33% to 54% — the only place where most residents now feel safe.

  • Govan Mbeki Road: up 15 points, to 33%.

  • New Eisleben Road: up 14 points, to 29%.

  • Stock Road: up 13 points, to 32%.

  • Sheffield Road: up 12 points, to 25%.

  • Across all five places together: up 15 points, from 20% to 34%.


Residents still feel safest close to home. On the four busy roads, most people still feel unsafe — Sheffield Road most of all — which shows where continued attention is needed most.


These results are based on a 95% confidence level, with a margin of error of ±2.7%.
